Growing Up Among Blacks

Who did you grow up with? Did you ever notice the difference in colour, ethnicity, religion of your friends when you were little?  I haven’t.

I grew up in an environment where the majority of people where white or at most mulatto and that was never a problem for me.
But the other day I met a friend in a supermarket, he’s from west Africa and has child. He said: “You have to meet my daughter, I need to get her ready to go to Africa.”
Fine for me, that’s a fantastic news but then he added something confusing: “she starts crying when she sees someone really black, I need her to get used to this.”
Wow! That was my reaction. Wow!
What does that say of environment where children are supposed to grow up in? What about their self identification?
